Sevagram is the name of a town in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was the location of Mohandas Gandhi's ashram and residence from 1936 until his death in 1948. Sevagram is a small town near Wardha (8 km). Mahatma Gandhi reached the village on April 30, 1936 early in the morning around 5 am. He stayed here for about five to six days. He called the people of the village on the purpose of his visit and asked them to allow him to live here. He had no intention of keeping anyone except his wife Kasturba. However, gradually the pressure of work required permission to have colleagues until Sevagram Ashram became a full-fledged institution.
When Gandhi started a padayatra (walk) in 1930 from the Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi for the Salt Satyagraha, he decided not to return to Sabarmati until Indian independence was achieved. Freedom was not achieved this time and Gandhi was imprisoned for more than two years. After his release, he traveled for some time. He decided to make a village in the middle of India his headquarters. He came to Wardha in 1934, at the invitation of Jamnalalji Bajaj. In April 1936, Gandhiji established his residence in the town of Shegaon which he renamed Sevagram, meaning "town of work". Gandhi was 67 years old when he came to Sevagram. From then on, Sevagram became an exciting place. Many decisions on important national issues and movements were made at Sevagram.
And it earns its reputation. Sewa means work and Gram means community. There is also Gandhi Ashram and Gyan Mandir. Nagpur is 88km from here.
